Production Log

We now have only a few lyrics that need to be shot for. we should be filming these shots on thursday or friday and by then we would have completed our filming altogether and can begin to start the editing of our footage.

Production Log

Since last updating the production log, our group has done more filming for the opening verses of our music video and more scenes in central London. So far our group has done half the filming for our music video. we are hoping to meet our deadline by working extra hard this week. We have a schedule which will allow us to finish before the deadline if we follow the schedule.

Production Log

During these couple of days we have been doing filming with our new artist. We have done filming in central london and an urban estate. We are planning to do some filming today with our main artist again, if we manage to do this we will be back on track in terms of doing footage we have done with our other artists. We are also planning to go to central london on saturday with our main performer and the main girl in the video.

Production Log

So far, we have complted and uploaded our storyboard, shooting schedule, photos of performers we are considering to use in our muic video. Our group has even complted a presenatation on vidula codes that we want to construct in our music video. In addition, we have completed a 1 st draft of our cd front cover, which we have decided to call wretchorespective. We feel as though this isa good title for wretch 32's debut album. Our group now still has to complete the editing of our vox pop which will be helpful as it will allow us to devolp our editing skills. Our group must also take pictures of our main performer for the ancillary texts and begin some filming in the following weeks.

Revolution of pop music

The revolution of pop properly began after the thriller music video made by Michael Jackson. His was the first video to present music in almost like a film style. This led the way for how music videos, would then be constructed. Other artists like Madonna and Prince also continued to follow this trend leading to a new way of presenting music videos. These big name artists have even influenced modern time music artists like lady gaga, Britney spears and Justin Timberlake. Making music videos in to small films has been successful because it has given audiences another form of entertainment as opposed to just listen to the song. Another reason as to why pop music videos have continued to be successful is that they give audiences a deeper meaning of the lyrics and understand the song better.

Questions used for the vox pops

What do you expect to see in a music video of this genre?
Which music TV channels would you expect to see this music video on?
Why do you watch a music video?
what themes or narratives do you expect to see in a music video of this genre?
How do you think a male performer in this music video should be represented?
How do you think we can make an RnB/ Grime music video original?

Possible Equipment To Use

Video Plan

Wretch 32 and Haydon actors will perform in front of the green screen doing the performance scene, this is going to be done by us because we have seen performance scenes in a lot of Grime music videos. So for us not to include a performance scene would have meant that our music video does not look properly like a grime music video which is essential in attracting your target audience.
The next part to our video would be wretch 32 properly introducing himself and talking about him and his girl, In this part of the video we want to include some narrative scenes. These narrative scenes would be of wretch 32 and his girl going through minor difficulties, we may even include a love triangle as we feel there are parts in the song where he says there maybe a another invlved in the situation.
The third part to our music video is a performance of Haydon, performing his part of the song. The character Haydon is not going to be included in the narrative scenes because we feel as though this will blur the storyline between wretch 32 and his girrlfriend, we dont want to confuse audiences so we opted out this idea. In the performance scenes we will try to shoot Haydon from a range of angles and use some close ups to engage the audience and withhold their interest. There may also be performance parts where both Haydon and wretch 32 will be together, so that there is some variety to our music video.
The next part of the music will focus back on wretch 32 and his girlfriend we will show them together having a good time in a range of places which we are thinking maybe their neighbourhood, central london, out to dinner, at a funfair and other places where they can enjoy themselves. we will want to show how they have progressed by changung location to more sophisticated places as the scenes move on.
In between the different scenes where wretch32 and his girlfriend are going out we will show Haydon performing the chorus, we will try to make this subtle as we do not want the audience to be put of from the jumps in scenarios. there where also be a combination of performance and narrative towards the end closing the video. Our group wants to also include stop motion or some other technique within our video which we may possibly do in the end if we are able to because we have not thought of how we will do this so far.

Within these dates we are hoping to get more footage for the narrative scenes within the video.

Date: Monday 8th November – 22nd November 2010-10-03

Within these date we hope to go over and reshoot any parts of the music video we feel need to be improved.

Date: Monday 23rd November – 30th November we hope to get the final pieces of footage done within these dates.

Date: 1st December -19th December- get all filming and refilming of both performance and narrative scenes done, so we can move on to editing after holidays.

Generic Codes

Generic codes of R&B/ Hip-Hop
Technical codes
- Many two shots can be used to show the two people (Boy and Girl) together (highlights romanticism that couple share).
- Tracking shots and performance shots of the artist towards their "lover" in the video is also generic and will convey their relationship to higher gravity, virtue and significance.
Symbolic codes
- Interactions with the other model who is playing the part of the lover such as; touching, holding, deep stares into their eyes and a common generic symbolic code is when a male/female holds their partners chin and gazes into their eyes as an example.
Generic conventions
- Items of Mise en scene such as rings, bangles and necklaces/ expensive jewellery are all generic for an R&B/Hip-Hop video
- Clothing will range from stereotypical attire for the main grime artist, his spouse and other minute characters in the video in order to fit into the conventions of the genre appropriately and aim at our main target audience well. However the costumes will also have a sense of casualness to them, that can illustrate a less intimidating and more sophisticated/ laid back feeling to the performers and the video on a whole, which will be useful to subverting the conventions because of the romantic tone that the video will possess.
- Dark colours are often used to portray negative feelings of the artist (through the grime genre and somewhat stereotypical portrayal of artist from a Marxist perspective)
- Bright and vibrant colours however will also be used to show the artists positive feelings, which will connote well towards the song as it is meant to be positive and uplifting, and therefore also subversive to the genre.
- R&B video's tend to be performance and narrative based

Me And You lyrics Analysis

This song is sung by Haydon and wretch 32, wretch 32 is a predominantly grime artist whereas Haydon is an RnB artist. The main performer of the song is wretch 32, he is discussing his relationship in this song. Wretch 32 has made many songs about his love life; this is one of his more famous ones. He is an unsigned artist who is relatively well known in the Grime scene.

The opening verse of the lyrics of the song, reaffirm that this is a love song, as the Haydon singer says “Me and you”. This shows that this singer is talking about a relationship with a girl, as very few if any grime songs are based on homosexual relationships. We then here wretch 32 explain that he will not leave his girl, this represents him as caring which I think our group will have to take into consideration when thinking of how we will represent the main male performer. Wretch 32 then describes the reasons as to why his girlfriend likes him, e.g. he says,”with my smile she can’t stay mad at me”. This represents the artist as confident and comfortable with himself, this is a stereotypical representation of grime and hip hop artists. This alpha male representation is something our group will try to mediate in our music video. The fact that wretch then says “my egos a problem, were working around”, shows that he is aware of his over confidence and need to please, which is unconventional representation of a grime artist, giving our group a option to make the main performer less conventional. The mentioning of another male suggests that there may be a love triangle involved, which is a theme that we may also be able to incorporate into our music video.

In the next verse wretch wretch 32 shows that he is committed to his relationship, as he mentions the idea of marriage in the lyric, “i can put a ring around your finger”, this is also an unconventional representation of a grime/ hip hop artist as they are normally represented as disrespectful towards women. The chorus then plays where we hear the singer Haydon, expressing his care for his partner. He says, “you, words can’t describe”, this a quite stereotypical representation of an rnB singer as these type of lyrics are commonly seen in RnB music videos.

In the next verse we hear the artist wretch 32 acting like a alpha male once again, as he shows his supposed authority over his girlfriend. He says, “She knows what the rules allow”, here wretch 32 is claiming that there are certain rules which his girlfriend must abide by, making him look like the more superior in the relationship. The representations of wretch 32 we see in this verse reflect the stereotypical representation of grime artist in music videos. We are also given this impression of wretch 32 in the following lyrics where he says “money ain’t a Thing”, here he shows off that he is reasonably wealthy. This is commonly done by grime and Hip Hop artist, two very similar genres, as this is a genre in which artists are very money motivated and like to show their wealth and success.

In the next verse we here wretch 32 assert his affection for his girl, he says, “she makes me smile on a rainy day”. This lyric once again represents wretch 32 as a caring and affectionate person, especially towards his girlfriend. Here wretch 32 is not being represented as a stereotypical grime artist as grime artist tend to be portrayed as “tough guys” , who are not very emotional. We also her from wretch 32 in this verse that he in the past was with a lot of girls but has matured and changed his ways, he says, “ girls come and go, I’m tired of the campaign”. This lyric shows that wretch 32 is trying to settle down and commit to one girl.

In the next verse we hear Haydon proclaim his affection for his own girlfriend, just as wretch 32 had done previously. This is a conventional representation of RnB artists and something the audiences would expect. He says, “all I need is your touch”, which shows that Haydon is very passionate. The song ends with wretch repeating “all i need is you baby”, this ending is similar to the opening of the song in that it makes it clear that the songs main theme is love.

Overall, we can say that this song is represents the main artist both conventionally and unconventionally considering the genre of the song. There are some verse where the artist, wretch 32 is represented as caring and affectionate, which is not a stereotypical representation of grime artists. However, there are also verses where wretch 32 is represented as a macho alpha male and the more superior in the relationship. The two different sides to wretch 32 identified in the lyrics shows that in our music video we can have some creative freedom considering the fact that it is a grime song. Our group will also consider making the artist less stereotypical considering the lyrics are allowing us to, also this will help us to make our music video more original.

From grime pedia

Wretch 32 (real name Jermaine Sinclair) is a grime MC and rapper from Tottenham, North London. He was a member of the grimecollective "Combination Chain Gang", before forming The Movementwith Scorcher, Ghetto, Devlin and Lightning. Despite his claims to be a grime MC, Wretch has faced frequent criticism from dedicated grime fans, who accuse him of making "bait" hip-hop which he attempts to pass off as grime music. This is due to his unusually impressive technical lyrical ability (more often assocaited with rap) for a grime MC, his fairly monotonous flow and a tendency to spit over hip-hop sounding beats. He is also often associated with theTMT crew, also from Tottenham, due to his close relationship to fellow Tottenham rapper Cell 22. The pair have made several songs together.

Marxisim

Karl Marx, the founder of the Marxist theory, believed that the media and it's messages could be used for good in the right hands. However, in the hands of what he called the dominant ideaology the message could have a dangerously influential and controlling effect on the masses.

Sexual Objectification and the Male Gaze

Prescence of women solely for the purpose of display, rather than for narrative function.

The female on display is passive and objectified for the 'male gaze' regardless of viewers gender.

Women connoting promiscuity and lust.

Voyeuristic treatment of the female body in 'male' videos, and the use of dancers as adornments to the male ego.

The inclusion of women for display is a staple element in music videos across all genres.

Voyeurism: Erotic pleasures gained from looking at a sexual object who is unaware of being watched.

Post Feminism

Third-wave feminism seeks to challenge or avoid what it deems the second wave's "essentialist" definitions of femininity, which often assumed a universal female identity and over-emphasized experiences of upper-middle-class white women. A post-structuralist interpretation of gender and sexuality is central to third wave ideology. Emphasizing discursive power and the ambiguity of gender, third-wave theory usually incorporates elements of queer theory; anti-racism and women-of-color consciousness; womanism; post-colonial theory; critical theory; postmodernism; transnationalism; ecofeminism; libertarian feminism; new feminist theory, transgender politics and a rejection of the gender binary.

Feminism

Feminism is controversial for challenging traditions in many fields and especially for supporting shifting the political balance toward women. Some feminists argue that men cause and benefit from sexism; while others argue that all people are harmed by gender roles and therefore that feminism is for women and men. Feminists are persons of either sex, or females only (in which case males may be profeminists), who believe in feminism. Feminist activists have campaigned for women's rights such as in contract, property, and voting while also promoting women's rights to bodily integrity and autonomy and reproductive rights. They have opposed domestic violence, sexual harassment, and sexual assault.
In the media women believe the way they are portrayed in modern day music vidoe's depicts them and have tried to argue against this as it sometimes gives the audience viewing the music video a representation about women as a whole based and judged on this video. Which isnt a fair representation.

Feedback

Well done for adding four detailed examples of textual analysis. However, you must have a total of 5 minimum so please complete for e.g. the Tupac track. In addition, you must now start to upload all other evidence of research and planning work i.e. notes on theoretical perspectives such as feminism / post feminism and marxism. Furthermore, you should add details of the chosen track, genre etc. and your initial production ideas along with evidence of storyboarding.

Textual Analysis Of Snoop Dogg - Sensual Seduction

Snoop Dogg's video sensual seduction is a performance based video featuring an 80’s style theme with a post feminist representation of women dressed as dominatrix’s of every kind from police women to stereotypical woman in full PVC outfits , covered from head to toe in tight plastic or leather. The narrative is about a male character who is sexually active and has sexual fantasies.
Men are represented as stereotypically being more dominant than women as Snoop Dogg is standing over the women serenading what he wants to do to her as well as being filmed surrounded by women in a high-angle shot which emphasises his dominance over the opposite sex. He sings ‘all that we ever do is play in the sheets’ portraying that women are seen as sex objects or ‘sexual freaks’ as he refers to them in his lyrics -in revealing clothes and positioned in suggestive positions which are a conventional representation of women according to the hip-hop genre.
Women in the video aren’t seen as respectable or pure they resemble prostitutes confirming they way women are seen in the world of hip-hop and rap but subverts the realistic image of women in society nowa days.
The video is a performance based video about the ways in which the lead singer (Snoop Dogg) pleasures women as his lyrics state ‘she gone get hers before I get mine’ showing a close-up of his mouth which is a sexual innuendo (referencing oral sex), he explains how he seduces women as he states ‘she might be with him but she’s thinking of me’ and glorifies the stereotype of black males being womanisers he references himself as a ‘playa’.
The mise-en –scene of the star graphics also highlight his sexual abilities to symbolically takes women ‘to the stars in bed’ at the same time, he celebrates his masculinity whilst he poses with the women in the stars as they caress and stroke indicating that his methods of ‘seduction’ are effective, ultimately making reference to the stereotype black men are ‘good’ in bed and can pleasure women in ways men of other cultures cannot.
Thanks for adding me to your blog Shannon. You need to get cracking with your textual analysis and other evidence of planning. In addition, add youtube links for the videos you've added.

Textual Analysis Of Tupac - Do For Love

Tupac Amaru Shakur (June 16, 1971 – September 13, 1996), known by his stage names 2Pac (or simply Pac) and Makaveli, was an American rapper. Shakur has sold over 75 million albums worldwide. Making him one of the most renowned artists ever.

This video is by Tupac - Do For Love
This song is about how love can make a person do crazy things.
This video subverts from a conventional music video by being cartoon based instead of reality. This can help express the meanings of this song by using things that couldn't be gathered or shown by using reality to portray it.
The lyrics of the song are generic to R&B and Hip-Hop as they are about love between a man and a woman and how things happen and change the relationship the two people are having and cause problems.

This video is narrative based and shows what happens through the course of the 2 peoples relationship. There are scenes in this video where the women are dressed quite provocatively but this could either be the 'make gaze' or that just because its in LA most girls dress like that due to style fashion and or because it is hot.

The song symbolises an on and off relationship and and entices the audience with a series of scenarios that can be related with someone (possibly) in the audience making it a successful song as most R&B/Hip-hop music videos/songs aim to relate with their target audience.

Textual Analysis Of Nicki Minaj - Your Love

This video is a narrative based music video with a martial arts theme. The first scene of the music video shows red drapes blown by a wind for effect leading on to show Nicki Minaj (the artist) stand infront of more red drapes. The use red in the drapes can be a representation of seductiveness and lust aimed towards the artist she is also dressed slightly provocatively. When the artist is preforming she is by herself this can be seen as conventional because the lead or only artist is dominant within the scene in which she/he is preforming. It is clear what the narrative is about which is a fight between two women over a mans heart portrayed through the theme of samurai's. Throughout the video the two women are trying vigorously to please the man. this isn't as conventional like most modern videos because they are mostly set in this time period not over 400 years ago. The videos theme is reinforced by a famous actor known for his martial art skills. This can be considered as a post-modernist video as the narrative theme is unconventional to a modern music video with a narrative base. The video portrays Love and Hate In contrast to each other and the feud between the two women who both want the same thing. The death at the end of the video is to show how great the love for the samurai was. This Video has a strong narrative base and is very clear to understand and I believe it is a successful post-modernist video as its story line is generic but how it was portrayed through the use of a martial arts theme is. It keeps the audience entertained.

Lady Gaga - Paparazzi

The video starts off with shots of palm trees and flowers. This is a reference to sunset blvd. This video can be considered as a post modernist music video as there are many techniques that are used in which can contribute towards this theory. The music video starts off with a series of shots of scenery but what is noticeable is that there is no music playing which isn't conventional as most music videos start off with music playing.
The sequence links to Pastiche/Homage as it is similar to a classic Hollywood movie title sequence. This is seen through the use of the style of the font used. This is also unconventional as a music video shouldn't have a movie like title sequence. Although there are many Post modernist features in this music video there are still conventional features as well as in one of the scenes Lady Gaga is surrounded by people who are dancing behind her which is a typical conventional performance in music videos.
There is also another feature of pastiche/Homage of the Movie Vertigo directed by Alfred Hitchcock where the techniques are similar. The blurring of boundaries between humans and robots this is also called binary opposites which is present as Lady Gaga is seen coming out of a limo onto a purple coloured carpet (Which is also Unconventional as celebrities are seen walking on red carpets) Moving as a like she is crippled and finding it hard to move. In this music video there is also a lot of presence of death as there is a string of pictures of dead people in homicidal positions. This is unconventional as the music video doesn't have any relevance to death via the lyrics and style of the video.
Lady Gaga at the end of the music video is dressed in what seems to be a mini mouse costume which could be seen as Intertextuality/Referencing to a popular culture . Lady Gaga's dress sense subverts from typical conventions of musical artists within her genre.

Textual analysis of lil Wayne Ft Birdman - Stuttin like my daddy

This video's genre is a Hip-Hop/Rap due to the various scenes shown in this video.

In this music video there are various scenes where money is shown in large amounts. This is a stereotypical representation of Rappers and 'Gangbangers' or 'Gangsters' and symbolizes the wealth that they have.
In other scenes throughout the video the artists lil' Wayne and Birdman are seen running away from the law (Police or FBI) this is also stereotypical as it shows that these men (gangsters) are always running away from the law or doing illegal things. Although lil' Wayne and Birdman are running away from the Law they actually never get caught. This could symbolize that they are higher than the Law and are powerful enough to get away from them.
The use of Numerous vehicles also shows the wealth that these two men have as they change vehicles during the high speed chase from two motorcycles to a car.
The use of the colour red is to represent Gang affiliation and the constant use of this colour represents the strength of the bond between them and the gang.
This video appeals to the male audience by using action adventure conventions by making a car blow up.
